Bird Banding on TK Ranch

Several years ago we were contacted by Trevor Roper, an avid birder and bird bander from the Edmonton area, to ask permission if he could band young hawks, owls, falcons and Loggerhead Shrikes on TK Ranch. Banding, where a small numbered metal band is placed on the leg of a chick, helps wildlife biologists track migration patterns and behaviours of many species. Trevor is one of many volunteers that work with the Canadian Wildlife Service on this valuable program. He was soon adopted by our four daughters and has been banding birds on TK Ranch for many summers.

Trevor and Hannah Biggs, seen at right, banding young Ferruginous Hawks - a threatened species in Alberta.
